Five Full Days in Fabulous Alaska Just say AL yes KA and See & Ski our 49th
State Alyeska Price Hotel Resort |
It would be nearly impossible to describe this trip to the Last Great Frontier. Words cannot justify the bluest sky set
behind the whitest mountain caps.
Alaska was simply beautiful. You
could not say this was just another “ski trip” since besides skiing, there were
45 flatlanders mushing dog sleds, flying over Mt. McKinley in small planes,
driving snowmobiles onto glaciers and into ice caves, riding in horse-drawn
carriages, taking a cruise boat to see whales, eating fantastic food, buying
furs, and as an added bonus - there is NO TAX in Alaska.
Here are some of the “most
memorable moments” offered by the following ski clubbers to spark memories and
conversations of Alaska 2002- the Last Great Frontier:
Lee Bonham: Myself and Carol
Stawick crashed into a dog house on the dog sledding ride when two of the dogs
decided to go to their house (Carol was driving). Carol flew off the sled and into the dog house.
Steve Flynn: The wildlife:
orca whales, sea lions, gray whales, and eagles, as well as the wonderful dogs
on the sled rides.
Becky Morgensen: Combination of
eating King Crab legs every night, waking to mountains in the morning, dog
sledding, and Steve making the plane (for which the stewardess awarded us a
bottle of wine.)
Carl Cortese: Sunshine everyday.
Great skiing conditions. Ed Eickenberg
and Brian Kutash on a very icy double diamond hill. Brian fell down the hill, Ed cursed his way down. Ed Eickenberg: Ski hostess (Amy) showed all the guys how to ski the hills so we
didn’t have to use our maps.
This escapade occurred on
the a.m. of the 1st day. In
addition, we learned about the various trees growing in the area. After Amy left us, we proceeded to ski like
hell.
(breaking his 25-year old
ski pole), David Rademacher slammed his body on the ice, Roger Gingrich got run
over by a snowboarder, Ed smashed his wrist, the rest wore themselves
down. It was a great trip!
Bill Vahary: I OD’ed on King
Crab while skiing one of the biggest bowls I can remember. Not at the same time, though.
Brad Debolt: Carl Cortese took
me and Rich Knable to a poetry reading, thinking it was a jazz club.
Denise Belanger: Despite the
increased security at the airports, Norm Jenning’s requests for a strip search
were all denied. Ask Suzie Rogers about
her “knotty bowls”. Fran
Eickenberg: Skiing with friends at
Alyeska was a big highlight for sure, but the best was just being in the
beautiful state of Alaska. The people
were friendly, the service was excellent, and the view was awesome everywhere
you looked. Where else can you ski, see
whales, sea lion, and moose?
Suzie Rogers: After the dance
party, Denise falling off of, then falling asleep on Rich’s bed, then not
remembering it the next morning.
Sarah Glenwright: Touching an
icy-blue glacier where very few people have walked. Spotting whales and sea lions.
Holding three-week-old
husky puppies. Being rescued by the ski
patrol on the first run of the day.
Shopping in
Anchorage. What a fantastic trip! Pat Rolfs:
Waking up to mountains and the beautiful views. The plane ride over Alaska wilderness and
getting pictures of each other on the glacier.
The Seven Glaciers Restaurant - great food, great view, and a very
interesting (and friendly) manager.
Carol Stawick: Finding ways to pass
the time in Minneapolis/St.Paul airport, when suddenly the pay phone rang.
I looked around thinking
Alan Funt & his Candid Camera were near, but decided to answer it. Was even more surprised when the guy on the
line asked for Lee. I enjoyed the entire
trip. Being in the dog house was the
most unexpected!
Who bought furs? Laurel K. got chinchilla, Carol S. got mink,
Lee B. got blue fox, Vicky B. (from Peoria) got muskrat, Brad D. got coon,
Brian K. got beaver (for his ears), Denny K.
got turtle fur.
Laurel Kutash: This is the
summation of my trip: I held my breath
(1st day skiing). I held my
own (2nd day skiing). I held
a husky puppy (dog sledding). I held an
oosik (at the bar in the Captain Cook Hotel).
