SKI (Ski Kouncil of Illinois) sponsored its first curling outing on January 26. Participation from the clubs was excellent: enough members from all clubs showed up to form 6 full teams plus a few substitutes and to still have a healthy cheering section in the Waltham Curling Club’s viewing area. Teams each got to play 4 short matches but got “ice time” equivalent to a normal full game of curling. (Did you know that a sweep that plays all 8 “ends” of a game can run approximately 2 miles during the course of the game?)
BN SKI participants (Carol Drake, Donna Mortiz, Brian Kutash, and Bruce Sutter) and substitutes (Curt Johnson and Steve Parke) were split among the teams, that were formed at random but with an attempt to have one player from each club on the team. Steve Parke, now a member of the curling club, provided a verbal overview of the game and its rules before joining other club members on the ice to teach the teams the mechanics of getting your team’s stones into (and the other team’s stones out of) the “house” to score. One of the teams (Boarders) had quick students: the team had an incredible 6-ender (6 of 8 stones in scoring position) at the end of one game. Anyone who has tried curling knows how incredible this score is – particularly from beginners. After a full afternoon of curling, socializing, eating and drinking, most of the crew gathered at the Curl Inn restaurant a couple blocks away to finish reminiscing about the matches and for a satisfying meal. The consensus seemed to be that there should be a repeat next year.
